Age of Life: Emergence, Pt. 1

You can think big and you can think really big. German musician Chris Burda, half of post-rock duo Collapse Under The Empire, has tried to capture the story of planet Earth by writing cinematic synth-driven pieces about notable geological periods, to be released on two albums. He realised that such a project could be a lot to take in, so the first album will be available shortly, while the second one will see the light of day in 2027.

Emergence, Pt. 1 deals with the early stages of life, which started out as unicellular living organisms that became more in the Cambrian era. The continents were adrift - they never stopped - and the first signs of consciousness popped up. Nature had to compete with unfair odds and life was nearly wiped out more than once. Burda took a bird's eye to all that, cherry picking from the highs and lows..

Don't fret if the high-brow concept is way over your head (or if you couldn't care less), because the music itself can be enjoyed as such. There are subtle shifts to indicate that the next chapter of Earth's story announces itself in a track, but fans of not overly complicated synths and percussion will find plenty to enjoy, especially when he gets a little heavier during Carbon Bloom, channels Jean Michel Jarre in Pelagic Drift or mixes it up with waves of sound and single notes in Reef Consciousness.
