Warren Haynes: new album "Man In Motion" 05/10

Warren Haynes
photo: Stewart O'Shields

The new Warren Haynes solo album Man In Motion drops May 10 on Stax/Concord Music Group. Haynes revisits the sound of the soul music that he grew up with:

"Musicians are students for life. We have to continually take new approaches," affirms Haynes. It's not Haynes' first foray as a soul man, however. "Soul music was my first love," says Haynes. "The first LPs I had growing up in Asheville [NC] were greatest hits compilations from Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, James Brown, Junior Walker, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Wilson Pickett, and The Supremes." 'Man in Motion' contains all original Haynes songs with the addition of original Stax recording artist William Bell's hit "Everyday Will Be Like A Holiday".

The album harks back to another theme of his young life: Haynes started out as a singer before he began playing guitar. "The vocal is more of a centerpiece on 'Man In Motion,'" he says. Haynes' singing shines on the album, with a bold and emotive delivery that shimmers with his smoky vibrato. 'Man In Motion' clocks in at over an hour, allowing for its ten tracks to breathe and develop, punctuated by a stellar rhythm section and sophisticated, moving solo guitar work from Haynes. The studio band includes Ivan Neville on background vocals and organ, Ian McLagan on piano, Ruthie Foster on background vocals, George Porter, Jr. on bass and Ron Holloway on saxophone. Haynes recorded the album at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studios to two-inch tape with vintage tube microphones and everyone playing together in the same room. "We recorded it live to capture the emotion, passion, and spontaneity."
Tracks:
  1. Man in Motion
  2. River's Gonna Rise
  3. Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday
  4. Sick of My Shadow
  5. Your Wildest Dreams
  6. Real Lonely Night
  7. Hattiesburg Hustle
  8. A Friend to You
  9. Take a Bullet
  10. Save Me

Haynes is playing his rare '61 Gibson ES 335 on the album.

Songs for Drella - the ballet

Songs For Drella
photo: Scapino

Is it possible to transfer a rock album to the world of modern dance? Song For Drella, the tribute to Andy Warhol by John Cale and Lou Reed, was the last joint artistic effort by the founding members of the Velvet Underground. They used only their voices, electric guitar, keyboards and viola. A sparse record, put together with a lot of respect but not overlooking Warhol's quirks and flaws. During last nights première performance at the Stadsschouwburg in Rotterdam the Scapino Ballet proved that it can be done. Ed Wubbe & Marco Goecke created the choreography for Dutch ballet company Scapino. There were a few props involved, a gun was fired to mark the shooting of Warhol by Valerie Solanis, cheerleader pom poms made of aluminum foil, rattling pieces of paper, but no silver wigs or split screen movie projections to turn it into a multimedia event, safe for the start of the piece with a single dancer on stage and a rattling projector hanging overhead.

Not all songs of Drella were used. Slip Away (A Warning), It Wasn't Me, I Believe and Nobody But You were left on the shelf. Wubbe and Goecke added a bit of jazz and Big Apple Express from Cale's Stainless Steel Gamelan: Inside The Dream Syndicate Vol III album. This piece of avant-garde music made a part of the audience a bit restless, but it contained the best bit of the show from a musical point of vies when Trouble With The Classicists was faded in, keeping in time with the sound of the New York subway that inspired Cale's piece. Warhol was portrayed by two dancers, who projected his inner insecurities with jerky arm movements. The chosen jazz pieces were hit-and-miss. Oh no, babe by Jimmy Smith worked well, making a second appearance after the short first run of Big Apple Express and Mingus' Tijuana Gift Shop underlined the bric-à -brac life style of Warhol's youth. CG Train on the other hand grounded into s halt, the musical flow running out of steam in the process.

No sign of Warhol's beloved Maria Callas in the soundtrack, but that would have been a major challenge for the choreographers.

Songs for Drella

Ed Wubbe toyed with the idea to ask Cale and Reed to provide the music. But he realized that if that had actually happened, nobody would be interested in the dancers. The production is on tour in The Netherlands (February 18 - May 20, 2011).

Running order:

  1. Smalltown
  2. Tijuana Gift Shop (Charlie Mingus)
  3. Open House

Gladiators Eat Fire: Gladiators Eat Fire

Gladiators Eat Fire
photo: Jenny Miller

Seattle is the place to be if you want to hear angry, loud music in the USA. The self-titled debut full length by Gladiators Eat Fire will peel the wallpaper of your room, an ear bleeding collection of hardcore post-grunge songs.

Loud Is The New Freedom is their mantra, but there is method in their sonic mayhem. Listen closely and plenty of patterns come crawling out. Psychedelica and progressive rock are lurking in the shadow. Sure, they wear evil grins but once you come closer they are quite friendly. The slow burning Obarama contains a few licks that Robert Fripp could have come up with. Thumbs up for the new contestants in the musical arena.

Mark Blazer : vocals
Brian Kim : guitar
James Erwin : bass
Joseph Wilkinson : drums, percussion

Does It Offend You, Yeah?: Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

Mainstream success band looking for street cred. Does It Offend You, Yeah? use plenty of feedback on their sophomore release Don't Say We Didn't Warn You, and loads of ad-lib vocal samples. The UK techno trash dance rockers are trying too hard to sounding fucking cool, overstuffing their tracks with every idea they had.

Make no mistake: there are fa ew tracks that work quite well using that concept, like the We Are The Dead, adding new layers one at the time, the sci-fi TV theme pastiche Yeah and the first single The Monkeys Are Coming. Otherwise you need to be on serious party drugs and squinting at the strobe lightning to appreciate this. After all the noise the album ends on an emo note with the mainly acoustic Broken Arms, an early morning afterparty song.

Does It Offend You, Yeah?
James Rushent: lead vocals, bass guitar, guitar, synthesizer
Rob Bloomfield: drums, bass guitar, guitar, synthesizer, backing vocals
Dan Coop: synthesizer
Matty Derham: guitar, backing vocals
Chloe Duveaux: bass guitar, backing vocals

Damn Vandals: "This Amazing" b/w "Daddy Smokes a Cigarette"

London quartet Damn Vandals have a new single. This Amazing b/w Daddy Smokes a Cigarette brings back early Seventies glam rock with a hint of Bowie spiced with the "cooler-than-thou" attitude of Roxy Music.

This Amazing is pretty straight forward rock with a nervous guitar a la Television. The superior B-side Daddy Smokes a Cigarette is a mid-tempo rocker that would that could have been written by the New York Dolls or Lou Reed (if he would have got along with his father). It's a safe bet to assume that these guys like guitar players like Chris Spedding and Mick Ronson.

Damn Vandals:
Jack Kansas: vocals
Frank Pick: guitar
Adam Kilmore Gardens: bass
Chris Christiansen III: drums

The single is released on their own label Sexy Beast and available via iTunes. A 7 inch will be released on February 28 and distributed through HMV.

Live dates:
  • 02/23 Hoxton Underbelly, London
  • 03/03 The Enterprise, London

Carrie Elkin: Call It My Garden

Austin singer-songwriter Carrie Elkin has been flying under the radar since 1996 when she recorded her first album Simplicity. Starting out as an Americana singer with an acoustic guitar she has expanded her sound over the years and on her new album Call It My Garden she switches between country, gospel and folk.

Christian imagery is obviously a huge influence, but not the fire and brimstone kind, as well as being on the road - there are songs about Iowa, Berlin and St. Louis. The album is dedicated to her boy friend, singer-songwriter Danny Schmidt, who supplied backing vocals and the odd bit of percussion. Colin Brooks plays warm sounding Dobro and lap steel.

Musicians:
Carrie Elkin: lead vocals, acoustic guitar
Andrew Pressman: upright bass
Colin Brooks (The Band of Heathens): lap steel, Dobro, electric and acoustic guitars, vocals
Danny Schmidt: vocals, percussion
David Moss: cello
Dony Wynn: drums, percussion
Johnny Hermanson (Storyhill): vocals
Mark Addison: organ, glockenspeil, percussion
Raina Rose: vocals
Robby Hecht: vocals
Sam Baker: vocals
Trevor Smith: banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar

Carrie Elkin: Call It My Garden

Call It My Garden is released on Red House Records.

Tracks:
  1. Jesse Likes Birds
  2. Guilty Hands
  3. Lift up the Anchor
  4. The Things We're Afraid of

  6. Landeth by Sea
  7. Shots Rang Out

Mike Gordon: "Inside In" & "Moss Remixes" 7inch for Record Store Day

Mike Gordon: Inside In

More collectable vinyl for Record Store Day. Mike Gordon ups the ante with two limited vinyl releases.

In conjunction with Record Store Day 2011, Mike Gordon will release Inside In and Moss Remixes as Limited Edition Vinyl albums that will be available exclusively at participating independently owned record stores across the country.

Nearly eight years after Mike's debut solo release, Inside In, we're unleashing the album on vinyl for the first time as a deluxe double-LP set. For Record Store Day, Inside In has been pressed on 180g orange vinyl and includes "Minkinetics", "Trinners March" and "Be Your Tape", three previously unreleased outtake tracks from the album (available only on vinyl). Musicians on the album include Phish's Jon Fishman, Bela Fleck, Col. Bruce Hampton, Buddy Cage, Vassar Clements and others.

Mike Gordon: Moss Remixes

In addition, Moss Remixes, a Limited Edition 7-inch featuring two remixes from Mike's latest solo album Moss (released in October 2010) will be available at participating record stores. The release is limited to 1,000 copies. The idea was not to "remix" the songs, but instead, work with the moments that had lead to the germination of the songs. The A and B sides include full remixes of "Horizon Line" and "Fire From A Stick" (which incorporate bits of original demos, bass and drum jams, and many added extra textures).

Both 'Inside In' and 'Moss Remixes' will be available in stores beginning April 16th, 2011.

Phish: "Two Soundchecks" 7-inch for Record Store Day

On Record Store Day, Phish will release TWO SOUNDCHECKS, a Limited Edition 7-inch vinyl record that will be available exclusively at participating independently owned record stores across the country. TWO SOUNDCHECKS marks the band's first ever live vinyl release and their first release in conjunction with Record Store Day.

This 7-inch is limited to 2,000 hand-numbered copies, and once they are gone they are gone. The A-Side is an instrumental jam culled from the soundcheck of Phish's third show of a sold out three-night stand at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. The B-Side is an especially exotic soundcheck from Hartford, CT in 2009, featuring Trey on Bass, and Fish on drums. This Limited Edition 7-inch was created exclusively for Record Store Day.

Two Soundchecks will be available in stores only beginning April 16th, 2011.

Moving Units: Tension War

It's been four years since the last Moving Units album Hexes For Exes. Their new EP Tension War is a stop gap release before a high profile gig at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival on April 15.

With four new songs and two superfluous remixes - the Spirituals remix of Until She Says is boring as hell - this new release is mixed blessing. The new stuff feature their signature post-punk dance sound, but after a four year hiatus it comes down to just one new song per year for the LA trio. Pink Redemption will be floor filler, with vintage falsetto vocals, and Paris, New Mexico is heady mix of indie rock mashed with a dance beat. Until She Says is in its original format has a catchy hook that will appeal to college radio fans. Avoid the remixes and stick with the original originals.

Johan Boegli: bass

The 4onthefloor: 4x4

Minneapolis quartet The 4onthefloor are in love with number 4. They use four bass drums for their stomping blues rock songs, all in 4/4 time, and named their debut album 4x4 for a grand total of 16 songs (4²)

Definitely dark in outlook, but catchy as hell they play R&B the old way. Not the slow smooth modern variety, but the dirty gut wrenching Deltas Blues kind, with howling harp and hoarse vocals on top of the bass and screaming guitars. 4x4 will appeal to fans of The Black Keys, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Nick Cave and the North Mississippi Allstars.

This an album to play loud with your friends, sharing a few six packs or more serious liquor, discussing the lyrics of On Tuesdays and the superior cover of M. Ward's Magic Trick. It's OK to sing along with You Don't Get Lost or stamp your feet during Cashillac.

Avatars: free "The Book of Lies" MP3

Richard Kayvan and Tim Brownlow are Avatars, a London based electronic duo. They mix straightforward dance with treated, echo heavy vocals that bring back OMD and early Depeche Mode. They picked up a bit of airplay with their first single The Air.

The current freebie The Book of Lies is a longish track that goes the distance for a little over 9 minutes, with the keyboards taking off the edge of the desert dry drum loops.

They are on Ultra Records.

Trey Anastasio: the Hidden Track interview (part #1)

Hidden Track has published the first part of an interview with Trey Anastasio. The TAB tour kicks on February 18, Will they play new songs?

There’s always new stuff floating around. It would be fun to play [My] Problem Right There with Tony and Russ and Ray and the horns. It’s a perfect song for this band, though I’m actually not sure yet what we’ll do. I’m excited to revisit some of the stuff that was new last tour, like Valentine, because these songs usually take a tour or so to find their comfort zone. Last year was the first tour for this seven piece incarnation, and bands usually settle in after the first tour. Even Phish was a little less relaxed on the first tour back in 2009 than we were in 2010 with one tour behind us. It just always goes that way. This band felt way looser to me at the [Hangout Festival] than it had on much of the previous tour. When the arrangements are internalized, everyone gets comfortable, and there is space to explore.

Over the Rhine: The Long Surrender

The Long Surrender, the new album by Over the Rhine, is the eagerly awaited follow-up of their 2007 album The Trumpet Child. The husband and wife Ohio duo worked with producer Joe Henry on this one. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist have kept their modern day Great American Songbook inklings intact, but have added a bit more country to the mix, most prominently in Undamned, featuring Lucinda Williams on vocals.

Over the Rhines and Henry went through their Rolodexes inviting a wide variety of guests to play on The Long Surrender. drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist David Piltch, pedal steel and all-things-stringed player Greg Leisz, keyboard players Keefus Cianca and Patrick Warren and Joe's son Levon on tenor sax, along with soul singers James Gilstrap, Niki Haris and Jean McClain, all joined during the recordings sessions at The Garfield House in South Pasadena.

Opener The Laugh of Recognition has the signature husky vocals of Bergquist, but it's as Henry has to realize that her voice is the band's unique selling point. Sharpest Blade is Fifties piano ballad that could have been a film noir late night movie with Bogart and Bacall. Oh Yeah By The Way has a lonely slide guitar, echoing the mournful harmonizing and The King Knows How has the drums and piano striking up a conversation in the background.
