Annuals: Count The Rings

The new album by Raleigh band Annuals is not exactly new per se. It's a mixed bag of one-off, singles and B-sides that got a released in the States. Collections like these have "fans only" written over them in large ugly letters, but there are few gems that are saved from oblivion with this release.

Opener Eyes In The Darknes has a nice backbeat bubbling under the guitar and keyboards, Loxstep kicks off is a luscious ballad with a south-of-the-border feel that threatens to turn into rocker for a few bars before settling into an adventurous pop song with rather smart harmonizing and a healthy helping of well applied sound effects. Also memorable: the steel guitar country of Always Do and the free-for-all closer Holler and Howl.

Annuals:
Adam Baker: songwriter, vocals
Kenny Florence: lead guitar, backing vocals
Mike Robinson: bass, backing vocals
Anna Spence: keyboard, piano, backing vocals
Zak Oden: drums, guitar
Donzel Radford: drums, percussion
