The Mynabirds: Lovers Know

photo: Jessica Ewald

Leading lady Laura Burhenn of indie pop project The Mynabirds travelled the world as a temporary member of the Postal Service. Gathering bits and pieces she slowly assembled the tracks for the new album Lovers Know, a soft-spoken roadtrip about travel, her fears and doubts, and the universe in general. Produced by Bradley Hanan Carter of Black English she uses plenty of old school electronics, alternating between mainstream melodies and adventurous trip-hop backings.

Burhenn shook her head (and sometimes fists) at the world on her previous album Generals. On Lovers Know she is more concerned about her immediate surroundings. She discovered plenty while looking in and is eager to share it, but listeners will have to try harder to follow her train of thoughts. Recommended if you like St Vincent.

The Mynabirds: Generals

The Mynabirds

Singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn and producer Richard Swift came up with well received album What We Lose Iin the Fire We Gain in the Flood in 2010. Once again using The Mynabirds banner, their sophomore release Generals is a protest record wrapped in lush orchestrations.

Taking cues from Sixties pop (Radiator Sister, Buffalo Flower and title track Generals) and modern day electronic indie - Body Of Work, Disaster, this album is far more political lyrically. The soft melancholy Zen sound of their debut album get an outing during Mightier Than the Sword. Their sound might be quite the opposite of the lonely guy with an acoustic guitar warning the war mongers for the very last time, The Mynabirds are dead serious. Smart pop for serious people.

The Mynabirds: Generals

Generals is released on Saddle Creek. Release date: June 5th.

  1. Karma Debt
