The Clash covers for a cause: Hearts & Minds & Crooked Beats

It is fitting for a band like The Clash to have their songs reimagined for a good cause. The proceeds of Hearts & Minds & Crooked Beats will benefit the work of the International Rescue Committee, an organization that has helped the victims of crisis by providing health care, shelter and education. Most bands who signed up for a cover took the safe route by choicing the best known tracks, but there a few deep cuts like Hitsville U.K. by American singer Seán Barna and Deny by Dutch art-rock trio Labasheeda.

None of the bands tried to replicate the hurried energy of "the only band matters", but as a rule opted instead for slowed down reinterprations, taking cues from triphop, dub and shoegaze. Seattle’s Smokey Brights managed to make Train In Vain even more desperate than the original and Julia Massey appears to be taking a leisurely stroll exploring the merchandise at the market with Rock The Casbah.

The Dandy Warhols: Why You So Crazy

The Dandy Warhols never sought wide acclaim, but they got it anyway and that is what kept them going for 25 years. The Portland, OR quartet peddle a particular brand of slacker psych pop that gained them a fan base that are willing follow them every where they go - even if it's a dead end of which there have been plenty throughout their career. Their latest album Why You So Crazy is a mixed bag of genres - hipster country for Highlife and Sins Are Forgiven, an Alex Chilton rip-off melody for Small Town Girls, joyous power pop for Be Alright , psych triphop for Next Thing I Know, novelty pop for Motor City Steel.

They don't care if people appreciate their output, because they know their audience will have their back, no matter what. The Dandy Warhols are a marketeer's worst nightmare, but every now and then mainstream success will find them again. They will welcome the check, allowing them to keep doing whatever they want to.

The Dandy Warhols: new album "Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia: Live at the Wonder" 03/25

Alternative rock band The Dandy Warhols will release their first live album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia: Live at the Wonder on March 25 thru The End Records.

The songs were recorded in June 2013 at a show in their hometown Portland, OR. They revisited their third studio album Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia on their 13/13/13 tour, playing all songs in chronological order - a bit faster and often quite sloppy. The vinyl version contains two bonus tracks.
