On September 9 four damn fine underground bands - Wounded Kite, Great Joy, GDVRDGDVR and Showdog - will perform at Zaal 100 in Amsterdam. 8 euros (cash only!) for a night's entertainment, that's a steal.

Showdog: Tumbleweed
Dutch indie band Showdog released a well received EP in 2007 and a full-length in 2009, before dropping off the radar almost entirely with the occasional single as a sign of life. Fast forward to 2023 and they are back as a recording unit.
Now down to a duo Gijs Kerkhoven and Sander van Munster came up with five adventurous, psych-tinged pop songs for the new Tumbleweed EP. It is a showcase for old school craftsmanship while using modern technology. Melody always comes first, but is never served up in easily digestible bits. There is always something extra added to the mix: a sound effect or a subtle change of rhythm that will make the listener press play again to try to find out what just happened. It is like a seamless jigsaw puzzle. The pieces are there, but is hard to find out how they are connected. Just enjoy it as a whole and follow their lead.

Showdog: Cloudy Day
Amsterdam based indie folk duo Showdog are back with a new single, Cloudy Day. Sander van Munster (No Ninja Am I) and Gijs Kerkhoven (Gish) keep it simple with acoustic guitar and a bass line a la The Cure, safe for a loud outburst of feedback. Inserting this racket gives the song a kick in the butt, but it might be bit too much for fans of soft spoken, intimate songs.
The track was recorded by Jan Schenk (Hospital Bombers), with Gijs Kerkhoven on the mixing desk and Martijn Groeneveld handling the mastering. A+ for clarity and separation and fingers crossed that this is not a one-off release. A follow-up for their 2009 self-titled LP is long overdue.
Cloudy Day is a self-released single. Buy it (pay-what-you-want) from their website.
