SLIP~ons: Overtime

Vancouver based rock quartet SLIP~ons don't do gentle songs. Their new EP is guitar-centric in a 90s kind of way, but somehow The Jam slipped into their sound as well. These are the kind of songs that should be played at top volume, with the rough anthem Graystone as the stand-out track, barreling down the highway with the top down (or roll down the windows if that is not an option).

The only breather song is Brock Pytel going out on his own with - spoiler alert - a guitar. But once the lyrical contents sinks in, the listener becomes aware that he is on the edge of panic... The band won't pick up any points for originality, but top marks for riffs and hooks. Think REM on speed, with Sugar on top.

SLIP~ons: Heavy Machinery EP

Vancouver based rock quartet SLIP~ons peddle a kind of high energy power pop infused loud music that would have made big in the late 70s. Imagine a hybrid of Cheap Trick and Bachman Turner Overdrive. Their Heavy Machinery EP is filled to the rafters with good time stuff - albeit with plenty of dark overtones in the lyrics - that will induce head banging and high fives when performed live. Stand-out tracks are the pummeling Mosquito (skip the "clean" version, no one needs pandering to the bigots) and the title track.

The four musicians have clocked tons of mileage in various bands in the Canadian rock scene. They have learned that the best way to keep enjoying themselves is doing with they like best: playing in-your-face rock music to shout at the heavens and having a whale of a time simultaneously.

Power pop with a seasoning of rock guitar, that's he kind of music that Vancouver based SLIP~ons are playing on their new single Heavy Machinery. Consisting of four veterans who know who to write an anthem they barrel through the changes with reckless abandon, going for the true-and-tried tight but loose approach. Part Cheap Trick, part Bachman Turner Overdrive, it is a 101 for loud rock, with Brock Pytel, the former guitarist and singer of The Doughboys, singing his heart out and having a whale of a time.
