Late Aster: Dichotomy

Experimental quartet Late Aster once again succeed to get the listener on the wrong foot with their new single Dichotomy, a study in contrasts with elements of free jazz, dreamy soundscapes and left-field pop. At first it seems that the two sections of the song run in into each other blindly, but on repeat it becomes clear that they are carefully linked and that the sum is more than its component parts. The video was made by Harrison Atkins.

Late Aster: The True and Toxic View

Late Aster is a band that loves to experiment. Their new single The True and Toxic View is their most ambitious yet, with freewheeling trumpet, percussive synths, flowing guitar and dreamy vocals. They flip through genres, take short cuts when they feel like it, but always manage to land safely on the main theme. A maze of jazz, triphop and dream pop that is impossible to resist. Once you think you have found the way out, you will double back for another trip and find another route that is equally fulfilling. The animated video was made by Kelsey Boncato.

Late Aster: A Minor Fantasy

Late Aster up the ante with A Minor Fantasy. Using a piano prelude by Dmitri Shostakovich (no bonus points for guessing what key that was in) as the base they are off for a journey through jazz, dream pop, triphop and classical music. All band members studied at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, acquiring a deep knowledge of musical theory. The single is a 101 in structured spontaneity - every note counts, but it feels that it was invented on the spot. The video was made by four/ten media.

Late Aster: debut EP "True and Toxic" in May; live "Dreams" cover

Late Aster was founded by four students while studying music at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Half of the band, Aaron Messing and Anni Hochhalter, mix classical piano and jazz vocals on their cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic Dreams. The sadness of the lyrics really comes to fore in this stripped down arrangement. It will be released as a bonus track on the limited vinyl version (50 copies) of their debut EP True and Toxic, due for release on May 21 via Bright Shiny Things.
