Live at the Grande Ballroom Detroit, Michigan - March 2, 1968, an above average concert by Big Brother & The Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin) will be released on vinyl on Black Friday (November 29). The band played two back-to-back shows at the venue (March 1 & 2) for a live album, but the band's producer John Simon and manager Albert Grossman did not like the results and the recordings were shelved.
Janis Joplin and Jorma Kaukonen had a tape rolling when they worked their way through a bunch of folk and blues songs at Jorma's house in Santa Clara on June 25, 1964. It will be released vinyl (3500 copies) on Black Friday (November 25). This lo-fi tape, captured on Sony TC-100 tape recorder, has made the rounds for quite some time, but now gets an official release. The typewriter that can be heard in the background was used by Jorma's then wife Margaret, who was writing a letter to her parents.
Both Big Brother & The Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin) sets at the Monterey festival will be released on vinyl on Black Friday (November 26). Combination of the Two: Live at the Monterey International Pop Festival features the Saturday June 17, 1967 set on Side 1 and the short Sunday, June 18 set on Side 2. The first set was not filmed, but the camera's did roll for the second one.
Janis Joplin played a solid show @ the legendary Woodstock festival on August 17, 1969, but only a couple of tracks from that performance have been released officially. Now the long wait is over by way of a new double album that will be released on Record Store Day (April 13). Plenty of copies were pressed, so expect no trouble securing one.
Janis Joplin never drove a Mercedes Benz, but she did own a Porsche painted in full hippie mode. It is up for auction at Sothebey's who will put it up on the block on December 10th as part of their Driven By Disruption scheme. Which is Mad Men talk for expensive garage sale.
