Valencia-based Argentinian power pop musician Juan Pablo Mazzola planned to release the material for the new Baby Scream album as Limbo as a collection of acoustic tracks, a concept had explored on his Castell de Pop. He invited his fellow expat and keyboard player Eze Gruber, with whom he had recorded the Loco Club 2023 live EP, to fill out the sound and slowly but surely the pair gravitated to a louder sound, sharing the feeling of being lost in a country where people speak the same language, but is also quite different.
Wandering in an environment that never feels like home, even after living in Spain for so long, inspired Mazzola to dig into his own experiences as well as others who share likewise emotions, with some of them trying to find solace by smoking a lot of pot (Puppets). He also looks at the world at large that is going to shit in ways nobody could have predicted (21st Century Bullshit), with nutjobs in office who don't give a fuck (The Jester).
Mazzola and Gruber bonded over a shared love for power pop and synth-driven New Wave, with soft-spoken psychedelic rock serving as an intermediate. It gives the dark songs a shine that makes the lyrical content even more cutting.
