NYC musician Ben Fitts embraces static and other noises that crept into the avant-garde and post-rock instrumentals on Osteology, the new album by his one-man Conan The Accountant, treating them as welcome guests instead of unwanted issues. By treating the tracks he laid down playing guitar, pedals, white noise machine, theremin, analog synth, bass, drum machine, and ukulele, as the building blocks that he could reassemble, cut down to size or repeat at leisure he basically invented his own musical language.
Osteology, the scientific study of bones, is an apt title for an album that is put together from the ground up, with multi-layered loose parts that come alive by his modern day Frankenstein-approach to music. There is a huge difference though. Fitts did not have to rely on outside supplies to create his art. Every note is his and his alone. It is up to the listener to dissect the parts, but enjoying the end result is what it is all about.
