Theatre Royal: A Change Of Weather

The so-called "special relationship" between the UK and the US is pretty much over, but Theatre Royal keep it alive by serving a very enjoyable of mix of folk, vaudeville, Laurel Canyon pop, and even a bit of country on their new album A Change Of Weather. Melancholy is the overall main emotion now that they are getting older.

Welsh Coastal Towns opens with the great line "I look at my hands and now they’re my father’s", Thrown Up, Grown Up, about the end of childhood, comes with the realisation there is no manual for where to go next. Loved ones get struck down by illness, so trying to cheer them up becomes part of life in Feel A Lot Better.

All worries aside, A Change Of Weather is by no means a depressing album. The music itself is joyous and upbeat mostly, jubilant even, as the band locks into a groove to provide a backbone for the sunny side up melodies. And when they do slow down, as they do in Saturday Son and You And Me, optimism and fond memories take precedence over grief and loss.

Theatre Royal:
