Marco Benevento: Between The Needles & Nightfall

photo: Michael Benevento

Marco Benevento is the coolest post jazz keyboard player in New York right now, riding on top of a creative wave that shows no signs of slowing down. Improvisation is his forte, always keeping an eye on the groove. His new album Between The Needles & Nightfall his uses vintage instruments like a 1920's Wurlitzer 61 note upright piano (You Know I'm No Good) and the Optigan which uses samples from a floppy disc (Music Is Still Secret).

Benevento is like a musical lion tamer, keeping all his musical fits and bursts in check, leaving his audience impressed and bit overwhelmed at time. He is well aware of that fact and thrown in breather tracks like Between The Needles with a mellow bass line provided by Reed Mathis that builds and builds into a joined crescendo. With such a colorful palette, Between The Needles & Nightfall is an album that takes some time to fully appreciate its contents - it's demanding and wants the listener's full attention.
