Jordan Galland: Airbrush

Jordan Galland is a movie maker first and a musician second. Or vice versa. He recorded four album with his band Dopo Yume, an outfit that never rose above cult status. He worked on songs with Daniel Merriweather, Mark Ronson and Sean Lennono. The latter provided the soundtrack for his movie Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead, a vampire comedy. Airbrush, his debut album as a solo artist, was recorded in blurts and spurts over the last three years.

With band member David Muller on drums and bass, and Sam Oats on trumpet and flugelhorn this album sounds really English. Galland delivers his lyrics with care. The songs are richly textured - as a film maker he knows who to conjure up images and most of them are stylish and elegant, with misfortune lurking in the bakkground. He sings about ennui, lies, green umbrellas and the joys of a toy telephone. And if you don't get the picture there are plenty of videos to make things clear.

Recommended if you like Pete Doherty, The Real Tuesday Weld and Vincent Minor.
