Rachel Taylor Brown from Portland, Oregon, has a thing with doomed superheroes of nearly every persuasion, especially if they are officially approved saints according to the Catholic Church. Throw in a quite horrible death et voila: inspiration for a song. Her new album Susan Storm's Ugly Sister and other Saints and Superheroes switches between comic books fantasy characters - Miss Storm is The Invisible Woman of The Fantastic Four and - and gory church lore like the story of Zoe of Rome, who was strung up from a tree using her own hair after which her tormentors started a fire under her.
Pretty horrid, but Rachel Taylor Brown convinces the most when she uses her own imagination. Bruce Wayne's Bastard Son, a juicy tale about the really sleazy illegitimate offspring of Batman. Her music has been compared with Tori Amos, but while the latter is busy sliding to into self-parody Rachel Taylor Brown is at the top of her game.
