They Might Be Giants: "Careful What You Pack" MP3

When the review for the new They Might Be Giants album The Else was posted on HCTF, the record company did not allow the posting of an MP3. Lo and behold, they have seen the light, so:

Kris Morris: Little Light

Kris Morris is an Aussie singer/songwriter who lives in London. His 5 track CDEP Little Light is a laidback journey with classic instrumentation. If you like the sound of the dobro, baritone guitar and flugelhorn, this album will make a nice addition to your collection of self released acoustic albums. Apparently Kris went through some hard times, but hey, he got some good songs out of it.

Kris Morris - Little Light
Imagine a dark night and a slippery, wet road. Imagine a plethora of music legends driving in the same vicinity on this night (say for possibly a music awards night or the like). Now imagine a nasty car crash involving Liam Gallagher, Neil Finn, Ryan Adams, Bono, Beck, David Bowie, Johnny Borrell and Keith Richards. Continue on in this vein and imagine that in their long, painful quest for physical rehabilitation they are drawn together and start writing beautiful, weird, fun, heartfelt music together. If you can dig all that then you know exactly what I sound like.

Put it on on a Sunday morning. You can stream all tracks from his website.

Hilly Kristal dies at age 75

The club went first, now the owner is gone too. Hilly Kristal was the owner and soul of CBGB, the club that was the launch pad for the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, Blondie and many, many more acts who made it big (in a way).

Hilly Kristal, who founded the punk-rock club CBGB and ran the legendary Bowery institution for nearly 33 years until it closed its doors last October, died on Tuesday at Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan. He was 75.

Suzanne Vega: "Frank & Ava" video

Back in the day Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner made headlines with their love affair. Now it's a great song on the Suzanne Vega album Beauty & Crime.

Bettye LaVette: The Scene of the Crime

Soul singer Bettye LaVette was supposed to make it big in the early seventies, but was dropped but her record label Atlantic. Her new album The Scene of the Crime is a return to form. A big voice, with an edge. You don't wanna mess with Bettye, 'cause she will run over you like a truck.

Bettye LaVette - The Scene of the Crime

Recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with legendary Spooner Oldham on his trademark Wurlitzer piano, The Scene of the Crime is an album that has "classic" and "essential" written all over it. It's all about the battle of the sexes and Bettye makes damn sure that she will be the winner. Play loud, really loud.

The Scene of the Crime is released on Anti- Records. Release date: September 24.

The Lightning Bug Situation: A Leaf; A Stream

Brian Miller is 50% of The Speakers and he has just released his new album A Leaf; A Stream using The Lightning Bug Situation as his nom de plume. The other half of The Speakers, Peter Musselman is on the album, together with lots of other people called Miller (yes, they are related) and his wife Nancy and his baby girl Franny making a racket in the background. Brian Miller and Peter Musselman both played the trombone in high school and when they met again in college, they "began writing and recording quiet, experimental, folky pop songs, some 400 in all, not all of them good."

The Lightning Bug Situation: A Leaf; A Stream

A Leaf; A Stream is a highly personal album with great song titles like The Unhappy Robot Version of Me vs. Coldplay and Hitting's Not Very Effective When You Don't Have Much Of A Punch. Miller digs deep, so deep it might hurt. His lyrics are sublime with subtle arrangements. It's a well tempered sounding record about things going awry and getting back on your feet after being knocked down. If Roger Waters decided to make an indie record, this would be his blueprint.

One more thing: one of Miller's fans thinks that A Leaf: A Stream is the soundtrack for the SF movie Solaris. He has set up a fan page to tell the world about his theory. He is, of course, dead wrong.

Buy A Leaf; A Stream.

Danger Mouse > Shortwave Set > John Cale

This could be something really special:

Danger Mouse recently finished producing a new album for the London-based Shortwave Set tentatively entitled Replica Sun Machine. The record features a 24-piece orchestra conducted by Van Dyke Parks (noted for his work with the Beach Boys, Joanna Newsom and other misfit geniuses), with further contributions from The Velvet Underground's John Cale. Replica Sun Machine is expected to be released in early 2008. The Shortwave Set is already buzzing in the UK - the [London] Times called their debut disc "rich and inventive," while the Daily Telegraph simply said that it was "Fabulous."
