Welsh musician Richard Thomas keeps mum on Circadian Thoughts, the latest album by his Mint Biscuit project, a collection of instrumentals inspired by his immediate surroundings (Tumble Dryer Tumble, Coffee Stains) and ailments. The latter features most prominently in Skip The Light Lumbago (yes, that is reference to Procol Harum's A White Shade of Pale, an acoustic excursion with a persistent rhythm about his back giving him a really hard time.
He contemplates going to the motions of everyday life - "circadian" is a fancy name for the 24-hour cycle - counting his blessings and being haunted by worries as well. It is a snapshot of stories without using actual words, just letting his guitars and amps do the talking. Thomas is a brutally honest chronicler, who uses subtle rhythm changes to indicate a change of mood (or scenery). Only countless hours of practice and perseverance can accomplish that.
Circadian Thoughts is a self-released album. Buy it from Subvert (digital) and Elastic Stage (CD).
