M.B. & P.U.M.A.: Moho Abyss

M. B. & P.U.M.A.

Luca Valisi and Monica Calanni Rindina of Italian experimental ambient noise duo P.U.M.A. teamed up with electronic music pioneer Maurizio Bianchi for Moho Abyss, an album filled with ten movements inspired by both dystopian science fiction movies and the notion that things have fallen apart, literally, since Pangea was broken up as the continents drifted away. This fragmentation is mirrored by the mental nightmares that are kept at bay through the use of drugs (sometimes forced upon the people by the powers that be).

The music is free from melodies - it is all about textures, created by synths and field recordings, with a few vocal snippets courtesy of Monica Calanni Rindina to add a touch of humanity. It is abstract and fragmented, but over time it presents itself as a mind palace for sound, conjuring up the key scenes of the movies that were the inspiration for this dark and foreboding release. Best enjoyed with headphones, with closed eyes.
