Wooden Tape: Wool

Tim Maycox

Tim Maycox explores the outskirts of experimental folk with his Wooden Tape project. With a prominent role for electronics and field recordings his new album Wool is journey back in time, kickstarted by a memory of a bus trip on a hot Summer's day. He was just a kid, dreaming of Zorro, candy bars, while his parents were taking care of everyday chores. In hindsight it all seemed so comfortable and cosy, with only the prospect of moving to another house keeping him awake at night.

For an instrumental to work it needs to invoke images in the mind's eye of the listener, an art that Maycox has mastered, choosing his notes and textures carefully. He doesn't shy away from dissonants or applying jump cuts to ensure that his music takes precedence over whatever someone else might be doing while this album plays. Maycox comes close to minimalist avant-garde, as a juxtaposition for the pastoral treats he hands out in lavish quantities.
