One of the most cherished leftfield prog albums will be reissued on CD. McLuhan were an exceptional sextet, breaking all the rules and inventing some new ones on the four longform tracks on their sole album Anomaly, which was released in 1972. The bandmembers, who were students at the University of Illinois, named themselves after Canadian philosopher and media theorist Marshall McLuhan.
Early live shows featured mixed-media footage as they served up a mix of free jazz, fusion and orchestral elements, most of them written by band leader David Wright. They sounded like nobody else back then, and five decades later they are still an underground favourite.
Anomaly will be released as a limited CD (300 copies) via Think Like A Key on July 25. The tracks were remastered by fabled retired sound engineer Prof Stoned.
The current reincarnation of the band will play a matinee show at the Montrose Saloon in Chicago on August 3.
