Grief and love are powerful emotions and they are all over on the Passing Shadows album by Dutch indie-rock band Boyle. The band's songwriter Marten Timan has had his fair share of both and created a musical mood board to handle them, with his fellow band members adding textures. Grey is the main colour, but there are also brighter touches as glimmers of hope shine through, especially when all musicians step up to the mike, acting as a Greek chorus.
Introspection goes a long way, when looking for closure and opening up to the world again. Setting up shop in a studio and plugging in to record an album that touches base with The National and This Mortal Coil might not be an alternative for therapy, but it sure will help to focus on beauty instead of dread.
