Sykofant: Red Sun EP

photo: Thomas Ellefsrud

Norwegian progressive rock quartet Sykofant have found a way to mix metal with a bit of jazz. Their new EP Red Sun, the first half of what will be a followed by another EP later this year to become a full album, finds them sailing the waters that were first explored by Pink Floyd in the Seventies King Crimson in the Eighties.

Opener Ashes takes it sweet time to settle on a challenging time signature, setting the scene for a journey that will get a thumbs up from anyone who loves a good guitar player. As a change of pace there is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod to Floyd's Breathe in the title track. Overall, there is also a dark, alluring undertow that is allowed to come to the fore in Embers, a track that burns brightly, with chopped notes acting as flying sparks.

It is melodic and well constructed music. They had plenty of ideas to choose from and decided to why not use all of them to create an undulating tapestry of sounds, a magic carpet ride to the heavens.

Sykofant:
Emil Moen: guitar, vocals
Melvin Treider: drums
Per Semb: lead guitar
Sindre Haugen: bass
