Jumble Hole Clough: ...and I Think The Little House Knew Something About It; Don't You?

Colin Robinson,

English avant-garde musician Colin Robinson has been exploring the possibilities of generative music for ...and I Think The Little House Knew Something About It; Don't You?, the new album by his one-man project Jumble Hole Clough, in which aleatoric functions give a composer access to random elements, using Bernoulli gates (roughly flipping a coin to pick a sound) and Turing machines. Make no mistake: this not an album where anything goes. First, he created a set of rules, such as the notes played, timings and such. If he hadn't done that, it would have sounded like a bunch of unruly toddlers banging on things in a way that would have sent even the most "out there" music fan running for the hills. In other words: only musicians can generate generative music.

Robinson is an artist who is always looking for new ways to paint with sound. He likes to surprise himself too, so it's no wonder that the concept of writing music in a semi-automated process would appeal to him. ...and I Think The Little House Knew Something About It; Don't You? is far more accessible than one would think, alternating between prog, jazz and ambient. The percolating, echo-heavy Sir Edward Coke (Pronounced Cook) Sets To Work could be mistaken for a jazz quartet warming up. The Troopers Are Coming... should used for a short animated film about gnomes lining up to do some serious gardening. Bookended by the musical twins Oddle and Poddle this collection of short excursions is a fun ride for all ages.
