Belgian art-rock quintet Flying Horseman mix funk, jazz, triphop, prog and indie rock on their new album Mothership. Originally a solo project by renowned guitarist Bert Dockx it is now a full-grpwn ensmble, exploring the outer regions of popular music. Pulsating rhythms, dissonants and low-slung bass lines clash with the melancholic lyrics, creating a tension that is quietly demanding.
Whether it is the almost joyous funk in Hotel, the fuzzy post-punk guitars in Set Reset or the lazy vibe of A Song That Lasts, there is always a feeling that things can get sideways, going to the edge and coming close to a nasty ending. They take risks, creating an amalgam of sounds that is really special and very much their own.
