30db: One Man Show

30db
30db live @ De Melkweg, Amsterdam, The Netherlands - 2010/03/22

A break-up record, a musical closure, that's One Man Show. Brendan Bayliss (Umphrey’s McGee) and Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band) are 30db. Both musicians had long time relation-ships which ended last year. So they started writing songs, separately at first, but given the fact that they been playing together on and off since 2005 it made sense to join forces. They made some calls and got Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi All Stars on drums, percussion, and keyboards; Nick Forster, guitarist of Hot Rize, and Open Road bassist Eric Thorin.

It's not a big produced "fuck you" album, like Marvin Gaye's Here My Dear. One Man Show is folk pop record with a side order of rock. Their former girl friends are no let go easily, proudly declaring that they are "the X in the equation that I don't care to remember" (Always Up). Jeff Austin's mandolin tone has a sharp edge through out, sounding pissed off and a bit relieved at the same time. Bayliss' vocals have the confidence of a divorce lawyer who knows that he has all the evidence he needs to win his case. Anger and sarcasm are prominent, but with their shared experience as songwriters the ultimate winner is the music.
