Dan Auerbach: Keep It Hid

Dan Auerbach kicks of his solo debut Keep It Hid with the slow Trouble Weighs a Ton and when the listener settles back to enjoy a gentle album he slap him in the face with the grumbling distorted I Want Some More. The guitarist/vocalist of The Black Keys covers new territory on this album. It's less energetic (but not much), with folk hiding under the mayhem and has a more adventurous back beat - Bob Cesare takes care of most of the percussion. He has included Whispered Words (pretty Lies), a song that was written by his father Charles Auerbach which features great acoustic guitar and vocals by Jessica Lea Mayfield (Black Keys fans will recognize her from her vocals on Things Ain't Like They Used To Be).

Keep It Hid contains plenty of tracks that would have fitted on a Black Keys album - rockers like My Last Mistake and Street Walkin', and the bluesy Heartbroken, In Despair. It will help to pass time untile next Keys record. Auerbach is on top of his game with his songwriting right now and that is good news for the checkered shirts rock crowd. Auerbach is like Johnny Dowd - a roots rocker cutting his own way through the music jungle.
