Hand of God

Tim White has seen the light, or was it just a polite singer?

Went to the Tinariwen/Daara J/Rachid Taha show in Shrewsbury last night, a great night out. Tinariwen live just blow away the CDs, Daara J were huge fun and Rachid Taha rocked the house down, we all had a hands-in-the-air moment on Rock The Casbah and I swear Rachid was channelling the spirit of Commandante Joe all night. Wonderful stuff.

But the true wonder occurred in one of the set breaks. I felt a gentle "excuse me" hand on my arm, moved aside and turned round to look at the "excuser" and it was ... Robert Plant.

ROBERT PLANT TOUCHED MY ARM! I am blessed. I can now cure leprosy by laying on hands, and Bono has asked me to use my new power to bring about World Peace. Do you think I could put the blessed limb on eBay?

(Thanks: Triple-B)

Dave Schools on strings

Dave Schools talks about the number of strings you need to do great things in an in-depth interview with JamBase.com.

There's no reason for me to ever get out there and go, "Hey look what I can do." It's more like, "Hey what does this song need?" "What can I do to make this song fully realized as a band sound?" Maybe that comes with maturity. Maybe that comes with more production work and learning how sounds fit together in a soundscape. Maybe I'm just fuckin' lazy. But the great thing is I love what I can do on a four string. You know, throw anything at me, I'll play it on a four string. The six string is a fairly recent innovation in the world of bass playing. John Paul Jones was playing four strings all the way through the end of Zeppelin. He played an eight string, but that's like a twelve string guitar, and that was just for "Achilles Last Stand" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine." Fuckin' heavy, but basically the same four string set up.

Hunter S. Thompson: 1937-2005

Hunter S. Thompson
HST @ Miami Book Fair International 1988/11/19 - photo: MDCarchives

Gonzo journalism guru Hunter S. Thompson has committed suicide:

Thompson's heyday came in the 1970s, when his larger-than-life persona was gobbled up by magazines. His pieces were of legendary length and so was his appetite for adventure and trouble; his purported fights with Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner were rumored in many cases to hinge on expense accounts for stories that didn't materialize.

Queen live in Japan (the real thing, not the 2005 version)

Lineage: Silver CDs > CDParanoia (ripping logs included) > FLAC level 8

Liberated bootleg "The Last Time In Japan" (Viking Records 2004, catalogue no. VIK37/38). As the name suggests, this was one of Queen's final concerts in Japan before they withdrew from live work after 1986. A lovely stereo soundboard recording and probably one of the best-sounding Queen boots out there.

Which one's Pink?

Is there anybody out there?

Harvested Records is a myth. It exists in the minds of its creators. It is make believe. We are NOT a bootleg company! We're just a few guys who have been collecting Pink Floyd recordings for 4 decades and now want to preserve the best of their collection in the digital realm. The chosen medium at this moment is CDR for audio releases and DVDR for video releases.

Turn on the lights

Q: How many Deadheads does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A1: 40,000. One to change the lightbulb, 499 to tape the event, 15,000 to dance and twirl in ecstasy, 5000 to sit and grumble that "they used to change 'em better in the old days", 5,000 to wander around outside with (mix and match) one finger in the air, calling out "doses", "da kine", "veggie burritos", "groovy dyes", "guats", "spare change", "gas/motel/food money", 4000 to wander around outside dancing at the cars with the tunes blasting from the tape decks, lining up at the balloon trucks, 100 scalpers selling fake bulbs, 400 state/local/federal officers looking for all the above...oh, yeah, and 10,000 to follow the old burned out one to the next town.

A2: Two, one to twist it and one to light it.
