Composer and guitarist Gabriel Vicéns choose not to play it safe and repeat the strings driven music that made his Mural album a critical triumph. For the follow-up, which is due for release in March, he went back to using a smaller ensemble to bring his adventurous take on jazz to life. The title track Niebla (which translates to "fog") is a conversation between all the participants: although bass player Rick Rosato and Roman Filiú's alto saxophone dominate the proceedings.
Vicéns' compositions always offer a challenge - he is on the fence between jazz and avant-garde, but he also leaves some space for improvisation. What is the use of having a bunch of ace musicians and don't let do their thing, right?
Gabriel Vicéns: guitar
Roman Filiú: alto saxophone
Vitor Gonçalves: piano
Rick Rosato: bass
E.J. Strickland: drums
Victor Pablo: percussion
Niebla will be released viaClepsydra Records (CD, digital) on March 6.
