Steve Lawson: Amsterdam

Steve Lawson

In order to celebrate the completion of his PhD English bass player Steve Lawson spent some time in one of his favourite cities. Amsterdam was inspired by his bike rides, and he put his experiences into contemplations he recorded in his hotel room while he was there (with the exception of the album's opener Aerialism).

His fluidity and knack for filling out the sound with a bunch of gizmos make it a lovely musical road map of his journey. Ambient and improvised jazz are wrapped in loops and it is easy to picture him pedalling around town on his Brompton at a leisurely pace. Amsterdam may not be known as a place to unwind, but there are still a few quiet spots that are not overrun by loud tourist crowds, like heading South down the river Amstel to the Riekermolen.
