American alt-rock singer Ava Renn plays up a storm on her debut album Lightning Child. It is raw, in-your-face, even when she slows down a bit or takes a short detour towards pop. Her voice can fill a room when she looks back at all the shit she has been through - suffice to say that her youth was not a picnic. The scars are still visible, but now she wears them as badges of honour.
By using tried-and-true chord changes with her 5-piece band she won't pick up any awards for musical innovation, but that is not her point: it is about anger, empowerment and maybe even closure. Screaming at the heavens is a lot harder when it has to be done while keeping track of an adventurous backbeat.
