Black Manila: "Shake That Thing" b/w "Hoverfly"

London based garage rock trio Black Manila are releasing their new single Shake That Thing b/w Hoverfly on April 1st. Lo-fi and slightly psychedelic they mix West Cast sixties rock, with a hint of the Velvets and The Stooges. The Kingsmen have reincarnated as London trio, spelling fun in capital letters.

A-side Shake That Thing is the kind of song that would have been played to death at your local pub, a jukebox classic eating all your change. Hoverfly can be added to that extremely short list of cool songs about insects.

Black Manila: Shake That Thing b/w Hoverfly

Black Manila:
Conrad Armstrong: vocals, bass
Liam Ramsden: vocals, drums
Gareth Hoskins: vocals, guitar

Shake That Thing b/w Hoverfly is released on RIP Records (digital and 7").

John Cale: taking part in "My Little Paradise" @ Middelheim Museum

John Cale will be part of My Little Paradise, a group exposition (26 May and 15 September) at the Middelheim Museum near Antwerp, Belgium:

My little paradise gives seven national and international artists the opportunity to reflect about the tension between private and public, the boundaries of personal and psychological space, voluntary isolation and involuntary exclusion. More than sufficient subject matter for an exciting group exhibition designed by Hans Op de Beeck (1969, Belgium), who is also the first selected artist, and Sara Weyns, curator of the Middelheim Museum. The other artists are Carsten Höller (1961, Belgium), Janet Cardiff (1957, Canada) & George Bures Miller (1960, Canada), Pascale Marthine Tayou (1967, Cameroon), David Altmejd (1974, Canada), John Cale (1942, Wales) and Leon Vranken (1975, Belgium).

Injun Magic: Tang b/w Big Man

Brooklyn musician Kabir Kumar has released his debut single Tang b/w Big Man. Using Injun Magic as his stage name he played everything on the two songs, the only exceptions being Katy Cain's flute and piano by Oliver Ignatius.

As a member of the progressive garage rockers Anna Bradley, he is more straightforward. As a solo artist he can run free and pull out all the stops, splashing around in a well of psychedelica. These two songs would have fitted on a Robyn Hitchcock album, with the spirit of Syd Barrett lurking in the corner. Good to know that people still write about kaleidoscopes in 2013.

Recorded at DIY studio Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen (run by Oliver Ignatius), the current go-to facility for the Big Apple underground, this single needs a limited 7" vinyl release asap.

Tang b/w Big Man is a self-released single. Buy it (pay-what-you-want) from his website.

Japan Soul: Transparent

Brooklyn trio Japan Soul new single Transparent is exactly that: a lighthearted funky blue-eyed soul song. It's a step up from their debut Plastic Utopia, which was just a bit too smooth. There is even a bit of rock guitar (Armani not denim).

David Rozner: percussion, arrangements and guitars
Dave Lipp: saxophones, bass, eclectic instruments

The Who: Can You See The Real Me?

The 2012 BBC documentary Can You See The Real Me? about Quadrophenia, the greatest album by The Who, has found its way to Youtube. Pete Townshend is funny and to the point discussing the creation of the album, explaining the story of the Jimmy, the "hero" in the musical tale about the Mod culture in England ca 1964.

The documentary is available as a digital download from iTunes (US only, duh).

Camera2: Wasted

Brooklyn pop band Camera2 have unveiled the video for Wasted, the third episode of their nine-part video series, all starring the same kid: lead singer Andy Chase's son Julien:

I was searching for inspiration to tell me what to do with the Camera2 album I'd just finished. We thought having a young boy wandering the streets of Manhattan would be a great foil to what people would normally expect when listening to the lyrics. We chose my son Julien to be the kid since I had always wanted to do something creative with him, and Times Square at midnight was such a compelling location.

After the Wasted video was finished I realized we had stumbled on the inspiration I had been searching for... and this started the 9 video journey with the same team of people. "Wasted" was the song... the video... that started it all.

Wasted is a soft-spoken meandering late-night song, with rather harsh lyrics, catching the casual listener off guard.

Camera2:
Andy Chase: vocals
Michael Jurin: guitar
Aric Gillis: bass
Mike Williams: drums

The first three songs are available thru iTunes.

Live date:
  • 04/10 Bowery Electric, New York, NY (w/ Fan Tan and Teenage Kick)

Words about music (295): Robert Plant

It's sort of a feeling of power onstage. It's really the ability to make people smile, or just to turn them one way or another for that duration of time, and for it to have some effect later on. I don't really think it's power... it's the goodness.

TV Buddhas: Band In The Modern World

Garage rock against all odds. That's Berlin based Israeli trio TV Buddhas. A disastrous trip to the USA, where they ran into all rock cliches of shady promoters and cancelled shows and an extensive tour last year got shelved when they were forced to return to Israel to take care of urgent family matters. Now they have picked themselves up again and are ready to continue their never ending tour (they managed 200 live shows per annum in the past).

The promotion for their latest EP Band In The Modern World, produced by Steve Fisk (Beat Happening, Nirvana), fell by the wayside last year when tragedy struck. It's a nice introduction to the band's ferocious blend of fuzz heavy lo-fi rock. Think a mix of the Ramones, Mudhoney, the MC5 and the Replacements. All in the red, lots of leakage, and full of life and anger.

TV Buddhas:
Juval Haring: guitar, vocals
Mickey Triest: drums
Uri Triest: guitar

PEP: My Baby and Me

PEP updates Fifties doowop. Brooklynites Karys Rhea, Morgan Lynch and Ilana Webber have come up with My Baby and Me, a 4-track EP that spells SUMMER in large friendly letters. And yes, all songs deal with girl-meets-boy or vice versa.

A bit of nostalgia for the oldsters and introduction for the youth who will be - hopefully - enticed to check out the originals. Great vocal harmonies that deserve to come blaring out of the speakers from your car stereo, preferably with the top down.

Little Tybee: For Distant Viewing

Atlanta folk band Little Tybee took their time finishing their new full-length For Distant Viewing, the follow-up of the 2011 album Humorous To Bees. Josh Martin's 8-string guitar is still at large, and quite rightly so, but violinst/vocalist Nirvana Kelly demands her place in the spotlights too - check out the melancholic love song Mind Grenade. Musically the band is gravitating to jazz, especially during the jazzy instrumental Left Right, showcasing the swing of bass player Ryan Donald and percussionist Pat Brooks.

With the falsetto of lead singer Brock Scott Little Tybee might come off as a gentle outfit, but they have sharp eye for their surroundings and drama come to the fore in songs like being trapped in Jury Duty and the loneliness of A Dog Waits in the Doorway. On this album dreams and nightmares are equals.

Little Tybee:
Brock Scott: vocals, guitar, piano
Josh Martin: 8-string guitar
Nirvana Kelly: violin, vocals
Ryan Donald: bass
Pat Brooks: percussion

Musique Le Pop: "We Can Be Good" b/w "Turn To Sand"

Musique Le Pop
photo: Tonje Karenina Pettersen

Norwegian electronic/indie trio Musique Le Pop are serious contenders for your guilty pleasures listening. Christoffer Schou, Jon Kristian Furuheim and Elisabeth Thorsen bring back the heyday of bubblegum synth pop with their new single We Can Be Good b/w Turn To Sand.

It's all be done before, but the mash-up clash of musical tastes - Sixties pop (Elisabeth Thorsen and Christoffer Schou) and dance (Jon Kristian Furuheim) - gives them a head start in the current retro-pop boom. Recommended if you like the Mynabirds and Friends Electric.

We Can Be Good b/w Turn To Sand is released thru Cafe Superstar Recordings.

Mike Gordon: website overhaul, interview on "Rock and Roll, Yeah!"

Mike Gordon
photo: Rene Huemer

Bass player Mike Gordon has a revamped website:

A website is like a tooth. You brush it, floss it. One day it has to be filled, another day extracted. When you have it in palm, you can put it under the pillow for the dental fairy. If brushes don’t work well, there’s also proxy brushes – going lingual is more affective than going distal! There are whiteners, desensitizers, and stickers to allow you to write your friends notes across your front teeth. You can straighten, polish, crown it, or drill all the way to the tip of the root. So welcome aboard my new colon slash slash digs! The owls are invisible now, but like big brother they are watching. It’s a whole new world.

Mike Gordon and hi guitarist Scott Murawski were interviewed Rock And Roll, Yeah! to discuss their latest project.

HCTF review of Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards.

fairweatherfriend: "You And I" b/w "Fairweather Friend

Ryan Sunderman, Kevin Unwin, Tom Romeo, Sean Hunter are fairweatherfriend, a shoegaze quartet from Tucson, AZ. Their debut single You And I b/w Fairweather Friend is their business card on biking red vinyl, two gentle songs that will appeal to fans of The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine and The Dears.

You And I is a 101 of using echo, with the vocals riding on top, catching new waves of guitar and drums as the emerge Fairweather Friend contains delicate guitar interplay and the call-and-response of the singers is executed with pin precision. Dreampop can turn into navel–gazing self-indulgence of the musicians involved, with the listener left out on his own devices, but fairweatherfriend leaves plenty of room to get into the act of their art.

You And b/w Fairweather Friend is released by Fort Lowell Records on 7 inch biking red vinyl, limited to 500 hand-numbered copies. Comes with a digital download card. MP3s are mastered for digital playback. Vinyl challenged? Look for it at the usual digital outlets. Release date: March 26.

Toni Childs: "Citizens of the Planet" Kickstarter campaign

Singer Toni Childs has a dream: create a visual music experience. Her Kickstarter campaign ends March 22 and is currently halfway meeting its $100,000 goal:

My long held dream has been to create an immersive music driven experience that uses images and motion in order to speak to the spark & intelligence of who we are - TED TALKS meets MUSIC! After a lot of development time and extensive research, we have now assembled a team that will bring my dream into reality... and beyond what I have ever dreamed possible!

It's an ambitious scheme, involving 3D mapping technologies, to enhance the songs of Citizens of the Planet, the album that will be the soundtrack for the live experience. Hippie multimedia 2.0 if you will.

Cowlick: Night Vision

Hamilton trio Cowlick play good ol' surf fuzz garage rockabilly. Their new EP Night Vision is the kind of album you hop to find while browsing the underground sixties rock bin at your local record store. Dylan Hudecki, Jackson Hudecki and Ned Nolan deliver their songs almost offhandedly, but they are really tight.

The music may sound cheerful, but the lyrics are more serious. How about losing your wallet, your girl, your job and your keys over a single weekend, like the protagonist in I'm On Fire? Yes, it's the economy once again, stupid, and the representatives of the fairer sex aren't much help either.

Cowlick: Night Vision

Night Vision is a self-released EP. Buy it from the his website. A limited run was released on 3D-glasses (download code on the inside). You'll need a pair of those to appreciate their Money Money video.

Tracks:
  1. Money Money
  2. Instant Turbo Blues
  3. Hey Car
  4. I Wanna Be Your Man
  5. On Again Off Again
  6. Red Pants
  7. I'm On Fire

Thurston Moore & Loren Connors: "The Only Way To Go Is Straight Through" for Record Store Day

Noise geeks rejoice: no wave pioneer Thurston Moore and blues veteran Loren Connors release two sides of avant-garde on The Only Way To Go Is Straight Through LP on Record Store Day thru Northern Spy Records. Only 3000 copies ...

Thurston Moore & Loren Connors: The Only Way To Go Is Straight Through
On this Record Store Day exclusive release, entitled The Only Way To Go Is Straight Through, Thurston and Loren fearlessly dive into a hot, dark pool and enter a world of surging sound and faint lights. They can’t see each other. They can only hear each others’ searing notes in the heat. But it is enough to take them through.

The material on The Only Way To Go Is Straight Through was compiled from two live recordings. Side A was captured at The Stone in Manhattan, where Moore and Connors performed on July 14, 2012 for the second annual Spy Music Festival (pictured above). The pair met up again on October 17, 2012 to headline Northern Spy’s CMJ showcase at Public Assembly in Brooklyn (pictured below), and that mesmerizing set became Side B of this record.

While this was not the first time that Thurston Moore and Loren Connors have performed together, a vinyl pressing of their improvised collaborations is unprecedented. A mere three thousand copies of this extraordinary LP will be available worldwide ONLY on Record Store Day (April 20, 2013). The music will not be available in any other format, on any other day, so we think it will be well worth braving the insanely long RSD lines to get your hands on a copy.

The Steak House Mints: Love Songs for Prostitutes

Chicago orchestral pop band The Steak House Mints have come up with concept album of sorts. Love Songs for Prostitutes is all over the place musically, but the lyrics they the thing together, taking the perspective of lady for hire and all the kinds of shit that are part of her profession - hairy customers, tattoos and pleasing a high-rolling diplomat.

The music however can't handle all the moods. The album hits the ground running with three upbeat songs: glam rockers Hi Ya and Yeah, Right followed by tex-mex of The Diplomat Hotel, before grounding to a standstill with a bunch of rather bland ballad-type AOR songs. Just Drive never gets out of the carport and I Must Paint You can't be saved by adding dabs of electronics. After that the album picks up speed with bubblegum pop (Don't Mess with Me) and vaudeville (The Great Mustachio).

The album draws to a close withTattoo, a poor Sixties homecoming pop ditty, and the overlong Please Come Again that's only bearable thanks to brass cutting through the boring percussion. Kudos for the idea, but overall poorly executed. It could have been a nice EP if they had killed their darlings.

The Steak House Mints:
Billy Dave: vocals
Steve Gillis: drums
Shawn Sommer: bass
Vijay Tellis-Nayack: keyboards, sitar
Scott Tipping: guitar

Franc Cinelli: Alcatraz EP

Franc Cinelli is an Italian singer-songwriter living in London who fell under the spell of the inmates Alcatraz, the notorious Federal prison off the coast of San Francisco, CA. He became enamored with the outlaws after reading a book about murderer John Giles, who got close to freedom after tying to escape dressed in Technical Sergeant’s uniform, an outfit he had pieced together over an eight year period. The Ballad of John Giles became the first song he completed.

One thing led to another. He read more about the prison's history and decided to follow the murder ballads tradition like his musical heroes Ry Cooder and Mississippi John Hurt. Cinelli plays a mean slide guitar and his slightly nasal voice fits the subject matter perfectly.

Although the federal prison was closed in 1963 its legacy lives one and some of its inhabitants gained notoriety and were immortalized in feature films. Birdman outshines them all. It was the nickname of Robert Stroud, who was played by Burt Lancaster (the real guy wasn't allowed to keep any pets when he was transferred to Alcatraz, that's Hollywood for you). But fiction overtaking reality isn't a problem for an artist, who don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. And that's what Cinnelli does: five stories about murder, robbery and being locked up in a prison that continues to fascinate.

  1. Dear Warden

Josh Elkes: Laid Down In Bows

NYC singer-songwriter Josh Elkes got lucky when a CD with some demo tracks was passed to music industry veteran Neil Dorfsman, who recognized his talent. His debut single Laid Down In Bows serves as a taster for a self-titled EP.

Elkes is an old school folkie and thankfully Dorfsman refrained from polishing his sound too much, with the notable exception of the female backing vocalist who only gets in the way and contributes nothing memorable at all.

NVC indie rockers Anna Bradley have embraced the EP as their favorite format. Their latest is called The Last Great Day Before the Body Was Found, a quircky lo-fi take on the likes of Television and Husker Dü.

Daniel Fisher: guitars, harmony vocals
Daniel Kolpin: drums, samples, harmony vocals

Destructive Cult: Destructive Cult

Dutch duo Destructive Cult are into electropop and italodisco, two genres that often cross the boundaries of good taste. Rinse and Milan steer clear from the cliffs and come up with songs that would have made them huge in the early Eighties.

Their 4-track debut EP is inspired "by 1978, Camus and lone wolves". And that's correct is escapism is your thing. Stand-out track Talk To Me, with its over top vocals, alternates between Bronski Beat and the Human League.
