Some performances get talked about decades after they happened. It's all about "you had to be there" and if you would believe all the people who claimed to be present at such a show, the venue would have collapsed. Two of those shows are now released in full. Trumpet maestro Miles Davis performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on April 9 and October 15, 1960. John Coltrane was on sax in April and his replacement Sonny Stitt played in October. With Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Miles Davis was on fire both nights, while Coltrane's performance was sub par. A delayed flight from Switzerland and show at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen had taken their toll.
The shows were recorded professionally for Dutch radio and the tapes have been gathering dust in the vaults of the Dutch Jazz Archief. This organisation has gotten into serious financial trouble recently, losing its government grant. So What - The Complete 1960 Amsterdam Concerts is the seventh release in their Jazz at the Concertgebouw series. The fabled acoustics of the concert hall and the good ears of the recording engineers ensure the high standard of the CD's, with extensive liner notes. Dutch jazz enthousiast and journalist Bert Vuisje attended both Miles Davis shows and his notes offer a first hand eyewitness report.

Live dates:Seattle based multi-instrumentalist Elliot Knapp built a left-field progressive avant-folk album and called it Cheap Seats at the Cartesian Theater. He played most of the instruments, with a little outside help form friends on acoustic guitar, piano and percussion. It is a concept album about human mind, but don't take it too seriously. The protagonist appears be trapped in a room controlled by "the machine", but the story itself is full of rough drafts and dead ends.
Knapp's wavering vocals are like Kevin Coyne's and the mellower moments of Captain Beefheart. He is not a par with them, however. The album is grab bag of unifinished musical ideas and "kill your darlings" should have been applied to about half of it.
Cheap Seats at the Cartesian Theater is a self-released album. Buy it from his website.

Danish septet Cody is an alt.country band whose dark romantic songs finally get the rich sonic treatment they were aiming for on their new album Fractures. Founded by singer Kaspar Kaae in 2004, the band evolved into an underground favorite - the multi-layered compositions already coming into their own when they opened for bands like the Band of Horses and Tindersticks. By including keys, brass and woodwinds the complex melodies and time signatures have gained depth and urgency.
Fractures is an album to be absorbed without outside interference. It's gentle and unobtrusive, but irresistible. Close the curtains, disconnect the phone, and prepare for a musical trip that will you will remember for years to come.
Fractures is released thru NMS/N.E.W.S. Release date: February 1st.

With a mix of blues, country and Americana their new album Driven Back has traditional and roots rock written all over it. Recorded at their home studio the sound intimate and totally at ease. This is as close a house concert by Jesse and Noah would be.

London based garage punk quartet Sauna Youth celebrate the art of the 7" single with the double whammy False Jesii Pt.II b/w Oh Joel, mixing the fun of The Ramones with the deceptively innocent vocals of bands like Belly and The Rosehips, Lo-fi pop that's the perfect antidote for overproduced autotune crap.

A rather good book about mastering the six string: Learn to Play Guitar by Gareth Evans discusses all the basics and is aimed at beginners and intermediate players. The author pays attention to detail, describing the lay-out of the instrument, the various methods of musical notation, basic chords, tuning and replacing the strings (a must before you hit the big time and have a pet guitar tech taking care of that).
It is a good mix of musical theory and hands-on training examples to get you started. The audio samples can be downloaded for free and come in two versions, with and without the guitar, enabling the student to play over the backing track. Of special interest are the stretching exercises. RSI is a bitch and by following the instructions the dreaded carpal tunnel syndrome can be avoided.
The book is published by Intuition Publications as a large scale paperback and can be bought from various retailers trough the author's website. The eBook version is only £1.49.
We would just go in and Sam would suggest some songs or Elvis did maybe something he knew. Nothing was pre-determined. We just tried different things and probably found one that everyone felt comfortable with and had a good groove, and that would be it. It's ironic though that the very first things we put down, Sam recorded them and he kept them. And the only thing I can figure is after we did "That's Alright Mama" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky", he felt like we did have a direction, so we would go through these different tunes. He may have recorded some of them and played them back and we said, "No, that ain't happening". Then he would erase the tape. He never kept any of that. I guess because tape cost so much. So those very early things, when we were just experimenting around, he never kept. I bet he wished he had.

Adam J Broadhurst & Jonathan Millington are Under A Banner, a Wolverhampton based duo with a penchant for melodic acoustic rock that packs a punch. On their debut album The Ragged Rhythm of Rain they sing about football (This Is England Now), retired soldiers (Some Stories) and of course the English countryside (Sunburst and Back to the Sea.
Good old-fashioned story-telling never goes out of style. With their modern folk rock they should be able to make some waves in the club circuit. They are both multi-instrumentalists, which enables them to create a layered and rich sound at a shoestring budget.
The Ragged Rhythm of Rain is a self-released album. Buy it from the band's website.

Portland, OR quartet Queued Up name The Who, Thin Lizzy and The Hives as sources of inspiration for their songs. With a nod to the legendary Marquee poster for The Who: maximum power pop.
And that's exactly what they provide during the four songs on their S/T EP. They throw in radio friendly hooks and riffs, all gift wrapped in a Sixties stereo mix. With two guitarists chasing each other around the block , it's up to the rhythm section to lay down a rock solid back beat. Sure, it's all been done before, but these guys are here to entertain - not to go down in history as musical innovators. Buy them a beer when you catch them live. They deserve it.
Queued Up:
Todd Summers: guitar left, vocals
Brendan Gill: bass, lead vocals
Brett Hinton: drums, vocals
Jack Saturn: guitar right, vocals

People tend to forget that Jimi Hendrix was a great lyricist, a poet in his own right besides being the greatest guitar player to walk the face of the earth. His sister Janie L. Hendrix, president and CEO of Experience Hendrix LLC, compiled Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Lyric Book, a lavishly illustrated coffee table book the size of a vinyl box set. It contains the words (in alphabetical order) to all the songs of his studio albums and the best known posthumous tracks:, including unpublished ones: 27 rough sketches for songs that would never see the light of day.
Most of the songs are illustrated by reproductions of the original handwritten lyrics. Jimi did most of his writing on hotel stationary as he traversed the globe to perform his songs before audiences who had never experienced something like his sonic explorations and poetic imagery.
With this book his words come alive: the tender love songs, the macho bravado, the war in Vietnam, and the prospects of space travel that were so dear to him. Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Lyric Book is a work of love that is a must for all serious fans of the legendary guitarist, a meticulously assembled collection of his songs and more. This is as close as you're gonna get in appreciating the words of an artist whose legacy and influence continues to inspire legions of fans and fellow musicians.
Oh say can you see it's really such a mess,
every inch of earth is a fighting nest.
Giant pencil and lipstick-tube shaped things
continue to rain and cause screamin' pain.
And the arctic stains from silver blue to bloody red,
as our feet find the sand and the sea
is straight ahead,
straight up ahead
Jimi Hendix - 1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)
Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Lyric Book is published by Backbeat Books, an imprint of Hal Leonard. 294 pages. Hardback cover.
So what is exactly wrong with power pop? Not a lot actually, but it's a sub-genre that has been explored so fully that's hard to come up with something new or even memorable.
Chicago trio Cobalt & the Hired Guns try really with their latest album Everybody Wins!. There is a bit of They Might Giants in the arrangements and the joy of The Fratellis, channeling their guitar sound. But the overall feel is one of disappointment: they are a bunch of nice guys for sure, but they lack an edge to make it stick. They have assembled the bricks and tools and what-not to build something sturdy, but the result is a tree house for to minors playing under the supervision of responsible parents. Cute, lovable and harmless.
