Acclaimed singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo, whose career has been sidelined since 2003 by a battle with hepatitis C, is working on an album that is being produced by Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale. The Internet Archive has worked with tapers, tape traders, funders, admins, and over 1000 bands to build a great non-commercial music library that is freely accessible. Following the policies of the Grateful Dead and the Dead communities we have provided non-commercial access to thousands of great concerts. Based on discussions with many involved, the Internet Archive has been asked to change how the Grateful Dead concert recordings are being distributed on the Archive site for the time being. The full collection will remain safe in the Archive for preservation purposes.
Here is the plan:
Audience recordings are available in streaming format (m3u).
Soundboard recordings are not available.
Additionally, the Grateful Dead recordings will be separated from the Live Music Archive into its own collection. The metadata and reviews for all shows and recordings will remain available.
We appreciate that this change will be a surprise and upset many of you, but please channel reactions in ways that you genuinely think will be productive. If we keep the bigger picture in mind that there are many experiments going on right now, and experiments working well, we can build on the momentum that tape trading started decades ago.
Working together we can keep non-commercial sharing part of our world.

Glide Magazine interviewed Charlie Hitchcock who got kicked out of Particle.
Even though I was kicked out and feel partially that I’ve wasted five years on a "baby" that blew up in my face, and I sacrificed having a family, house, money, etc... just like everyone else to keep it alive…I do have to look back and say it was a blessing, and I’m very fortunate to have all the success we did in such a short amount of time. I've been in a TON of bands before Particle, so when I got in the band, I was always blown away by how fast things moved and how much success we got in so little time. It still baffles me to this day and I never really felt like "the band" deserved everything it got. Since this was basically the other three guys’ first real band, I think they might not have appreciated it as much as me, since they may have thought "this is how it always is," if you’re in a band out there playing original music.

Music company Sony BMG, yielding to consumer concern, said on Wednesday it was recalling music CDs containing copy-protection software that acts like virus software and hides deep inside a computer.
Sony initially refused to identify the complete list, but now says that it will post the list on its Web site soon. Meanwhile, you can tell if your CD has the rootkit protection by looking at the back. If you see a black and white table called "Compatible With," it's copy-protected; if the Web address at the bottom of table ends with XCP, it's protected using the rootkit method.

I wonder if Phish-heads realize how consummately terrible this Birkenstock- rocker really is. I mean, at least Jerry Garcia's endless guitar solos were somewhat competent, but Anastasio is a complete joke. I'm not even sure getting stoned out of my mind would help me appreciate this stuff. This guy makes such a mess of the blues that you'd have to be a real mental defective not to realize just how clueless he is. But he sports a "jazzier" and more "experimental" side, too. "Experimental," in Anastasio's case, simply means long, shakily improvised passages that go nowhere and amount to nothing. So with that, go try and follow the winding, muddy trail of notes on "Demand." Good luck, and don't bogart that joint, hippie scum.

The uninstaller posted by Sony creates a large security hole.
Princeton's Ed Felten and Alex Halderman have published new research into a grave security vulnerability opened up if you run the "uninstaller" that Sony supplies to rid your PC of its malicious rootkit software, which it installs when you insert an audio CD into your PC, as a means of restricting your use of the music on the CD.
The new vulnerability is as grave as a security vulnerability can be. If you run the uninstaller, your computer can be utterly compromised by an attacker who can reach it via the Web. Your computer can be made to run any code and surrender your data. It can be enlisted to act as a "zombie" for sending spam or attacking sites that are being shaken down in protection rackets.

The stupid jerks who are better known as the Sony company have posted a patch on their website to remove their dreaded rootkit which tries to copy-protect their cd's (hah!) but fucks up windows pc's in a big way (hah!).
This Service Pack removes the cloaking technology component that has been recently discussed in a number of articles published regarding the XCP Technology used on SONY BMG content protected CDs. This component is not malicious and does not compromise security. However to alleviate any concerns that users may have about the program posing potential security vulnerabilities, this update has been released to enable users to remove this component from their computers.
So, we are okay then. No, baby, we are not. Sony is still using backdoors to invade you computer's privacy. Read the indepth article by J. Alex Halderman:

Page McConnell joined Trey Anastasio for three songs at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, november 8.
Page came out with Trey to a huge ovation from the crowd, nearly all of which hasn’t seen Page since Coventry. That’s fair, considering I’m not even sure Page has left his house since Coventry. Trey then informed the crowd that the duo had formed a new band, “Halfway There.” Classic Red.
You could say it like was like a fairy tale at the time; Andy would be the good fairy, and Jim would play the giant, Brian would be the witch, Paul McCartney would be the frog who turns into a prince, no, it would have to be the other way round. Well, it didn’t seem like a fairy tale at the time. It was a lot of hassle. But I learned a lot of things, and I began to compose my own songs.
